Handbook

Back by popular demand (and because it was incredibly useful for us!) the handbook for the 2009 Summer Season is now available for download here. Beware though, it's a hefty 5mb - there are chunks below available for individual events, and the books will be available from round 1 in Rotorua for pick up at registration.

INTRODUCTION

BikeNZ and MTBNZ are pleased to announce the Raboplus 2009 New Zealand MTB Cup presented by Nature Valley. The MTB Cups comprise the Raboplus North Island and South Island Downhill and Cross Country Cups all presented by Nature Valley.

Following on from the success of the inaugural Island Cup Series in 2008, a similar structure has been adopted for the upcoming season with the pinnacle being the Raboplus National Championships to be held in Nelson late February.

In addition to the Four Island Cups being up for grabs, riders will also have the opportunity to take out the Raboplus NZ Downhill Cup and the Raboplus NZ Cross Country Cup. To be eligible, rider’s best four results including both Island Cup finals will be collated.

This year’s calendar has been created to allow riders to compete in events that are happening in conjunction with the series. For example, during the SI DH Cup rounds, Coronet Peak Brake Burner will be taking place (Feb 7th, Waitangi weekend). Likewise during the SI XC Cup - the Flock Hill event takes place on Feb 21st and can be factored in to the road trip or that weekend treated as a rest.

So while it looks like the spread for the South Island Cups events is quite long, there are some great options available if you want to pack more racing in!

The grand finale for the season will see riders from north and south battle it out for the Raboplus National Championship titles in 4X, Downhill, Hillclimb, Cross Country, Dual Slalom and Short track Cross Country. 2009’s Nationals will take place in Nelson over the last weekend of February (Feb 26-1st March). With the 2009 World Champs being held across the ditch in Canberra, racing will be fierce with an opportunity to represent NZ on the line.

BikeNZ and MTBNZ are excited to bring you this series of events around the country, and hopes you all enjoy this summer's competitive racing programme.

Don’t forget to check out the BikeNZ events calendar for more events that you can slot in around your summer of national racing!

For any questions regarding the series don’t hesitate in contacting rachael@bikenz.org.nz or Phone  04...

Who can ride?

Everyone! That’s the beauty of the NZ Cups, rounds are all over New Zealand and have categories for all age groups. Courses are chosen to provide riders from the almost newbies, right through to the uber fast with challenging, and totally doable weekend rides!

Competitors competing only at one or two rounds are also welcome and are able to enter on the weekend of the event (note you must register practice day for downhill races).

There are two main categories – Age Group and Elite.
All age group categories are open to both licenced and unlicensed riders.

If you wish to enter in the elite class for the first time please apply to Chris Mildon (chris.mildon@gmail.com) for the MTB Selection Panel’s approval.

What’s this licensing caper?

BikeNZ issue Race Licenses for Mountain Bike, Road and Track. Race Licenses allow you to compete in most road, track or mountain bike events run by an affiliated Club or Centre, or sanctioned by CNZ/MTBNZ or BikeNZ.

To enter the Elite category in either Downhill or Cross Country, you will need to hold a National Licence, and be approved by MTBNZ.

In order to gain Cup points you will need to be a member of a MTB club and have a National Licence.

Need a licence?

Click here to go the licence information page where you can download an application.

Also note that all riders are required to abide by MTBNZ Code of Conduct, and as such, are able to be drug tested.

CATEGORIES

All ages are taken as at 31 December 2009 in accordance with UCI rules (the international body for cycling).
Please note that this year in order for a category to be included there needs to be a minimum of 5 pre-entries in each of the three cups (otherwise it will be combined with another age group (s)) You will see some categories have already been combined, particularly in downhill women - we really want to encourage more participation and feedback has indicated the more people in a grade (regardless of age) the more fun and competitive it is (having others to race against!)

U23 XC competitors can compete in either the Senior category or in the Elite category (on application to Chris Mildon) during Island Cup events. However, U23 competitors will compete in their own (separate) category at National Championships

RACE RULES

Well it is a national series and Championship, so yep, there's some rules attached. The Cups have taken on a rather more relaxed attitude to the UCI rules and reg's (although there are still some rules applied, it does need to be a fair and safe competition!), but the full shebang will be applied for the National Champs in Nelson.  Our awesome Commissaires will on hand at each of the events so if you have any queries regarding the rules, don't hesitate in asking them for clarification - they're there to help!

Download the Race Rules here

 XC LAP INFORMATION

The XC Cup races are designed to enable   a variety of courses to be offered and we therefore have a mix of XCO (Olympic format)  and XCP events.

·      In the case of lap races the Chief Commissaire sets the number of laps for the race (after consultation with the REO and TD) based on various factors such as weather conditions and condition of the track. He/She may also be influenced by numbers of riders in each age class and therefore how the grades on the day are amalgamated. If there is an extreme rain storm or extreme temperatures a race distance may be shortened by the Comm (as long as the race hasn't already started), or if only 2 U15 men are entered they may need to be amalgamated with U17's so it is difficult to publish a table showing definitive race grades and laps although I think there is merit in producing a guideline table, as in previous years, noting that this is subject to change.

Click here to download a XC Lap guide for the XC Cup events PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A GUIDE ONLY, THE NO OF LAPS MAY CHANGE AS PER THE INFORMATION ABOVE

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure their bike and safety equipment (pads, helmets etc) is race worthy.

MTBNZ have this year introduced a minimum protective equipment policy for downhill.

This policy will be implemented for this summer's (2008-09) NZ Cups, and National Championships events. It is also anticipated that affiliated clubs will also adopt the policy, as a best practice approach for dealing with this important part of our sport.

Click here to download the Policy.

The National Championships is the only event this summer which is registered with the UCI for ranking points in New Zealand for downhill, cross country and four cross. Ranking points for Elite riders are required for entry into World Cup events (you need 20) and for Cross Country, give you a better position on the start grid.

The following outlines which events and categories have UCI points, prize money and National Jerseys awarded.

National Championships – Nelson
Downhill & Cross Country Elite Men and Women
CN Event
UCI points and National Jersey (NZL Licence holders only)

National Marathon Mountain Bike Championships - Rotorua
Marathon Mountain Bike for Elite Men and Women
CN Event
UCI points and National Jersey (NZL Licence Holders only)

NZCT TEAMS COMPETITION

The Raboplus NZ MTB Cup incorporates a Teams Competition. The idea behind having a ‘Team of the Year’ competition is to encourage more of an atmosphere at events by giving local industry a chance to support riders and have a space within the Event Village and to create an independent prize pool for team participation. It is also a great way of promoting a product by having a team wearing a specific brand.

ENTITLEMENTS

Teams will be allocated with a place in the Event Village prior to the commencement of the Practice day (DH) or Race day (XC) and will retain the site for the duration of the relevant competition days only.  Teams are also encouraged to provide team lists, photo's and media releases for the website.
