BikeNZ

Race Licences

BikeNZ issues licenses on behalf of MTBNZ and BikeNZ Road & Track and are valid for the calendar year. To obtain a race licence you will need to be a financial member of a MTBNZ or  BR&T club. You can find a club in your area by clicking here.

BMX NZ has its own licence system, and information can be found here. You cannot use a BMX NZ licence to compete in BR&T or MTBNZ events, and you cannot use a BR&T or MTBNZ licence to compete in BMX events.  For all BMX licence enquiries please contact your local club and then Christine Misa via admin@bmx.co.nz or  09 235 7026  or  021 247 8934 .

For all MTBNZ and BR&T licence and insurance enquiries, please contact Simon Gwynn (Membership Service and Administration Officer) via email simon@bikenz.org.nz or phone  04 5600 331 . General information about licence and answers to commonly asked questions regarding licences can be found below.

General Licence Information for BR&T/MTBNZ

BikeNZ issues Race Licenses and Technical Licenses for racing and technical duties in the disciplines of its member organisations. The Cross Country, Downhill and 4X disciplines are administered by member organisation Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ).  Road and Track racing disciplines are admnistered by member organisation BikeNZ Road & Track (BR&T).

Although BikeNZ issues the Race/Technical licence, your membership will be with the either MTBNZ or BR&T (and not directly to BikeNZ). Therefore you will be bound by your member organisation's constitution, rules and regulations (you can find these at the relevant group on Ridestrong - see links above). Completion of the relevant licence application form records your agreement to be a member of your member organisation. You will also need to be a financial member of a BR&T or MTBNZ affiliated club.

BikeNZ race licences issued for BR&T and MTBNZ members allow you to compete in most mountain bike, road or track events run by an affiliated Club or Centre, or sanctioned by Mountain Bike NZ (MTBNZ), BikeNZ Road & Track (BR&T), or BikeNZ.  Ensure you check the licence requirements for the specific event you intend to compete in.

The specifc requirements and fees for BikeNZ technical licenses associated with BR&T or MTBNZ are determined by each member organisation and are detailed in the licence applications forms. You can obtain a Technical Licence in the categories of Commissaire, Manager, Mechanic and/or Soigneur. BikeNZ also issues technical licenses directly to officials (don't have to be a member of an affiliated club). These applications should be forwarded direct to the BikeNZ office.

Please be aware the all race licence holders are subject to drug testing to ensure competitions are fair and riders are free from the use of performance enhancing drugs. As a licenced rider, you could be tested at any time. For more information on this click here

2010 Licences will be issued now and can be used for events held between 1 November 2009 and 31 December 2010.

You should apply for your BR&T licence through your local club. They will get you to fill in a club form and the BikeNZ licence form (or a combined form covering both). You pay your club the appropriate fees, which include club levy, centre levy and the national levy. The national levy is passed on to BikeNZ by your club when they send the form to the office for processing.

There are 4 race licence types for CNZ licences, and each determines the georaphic area that you are permitted to race in. Your race category is generally determined by your age (as of 31 Dec 2010).

CLUB LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $25

These licences can only be used for competition within the rider's own club, with no automatic right to ride in inter-club or centre events.

CENTRE LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $40

These licences can be used in the riders own club, inter-club events, Open Events within the riders own Centre, and Centre Championships, but exclude National Championships.

NATIONAL LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $80 (senior) or $25 (junior Under 17)

These licences can be used in most Road, Track, and Mountain Bike Club, Centre and National Events, including National Championships and Open events run by an affiliated Club or Centre, or sanctioned by BR&T/MTBNZ or BikeNZ. Ensure you check the licence requirements with the specific event you intend to participate in.

All junior riders in the Under 17 age category and below should purchase a national licence. The fee has been set so as to encourage young riders to try racing, enabling them to race in any sanctioned event around the country. Note: there may be restrictions on Under 17 (and under) riders participating in 'Open' events. Check with race organisers prior to entry to ensure that you are eligible to compete.

INTERNATIONAL LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $130 + the appropriate insurance*. If the rider already has a national level licence, the cost is $50 + the appropriate insurance*.

This type of licence is only required if the rider wants to compete outside of New Zealand.

These licences can be used in all of the above events, plus international competition.

* UCI requirements state that insurance must be included with the cost of an International Licence, and BikeNZ offers comprehensive travel insurance that meets these requirements. Insurance information can be found here.

There are 2 types of race licences available for MTBNZ members: National and International.

NATIONAL LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $80 (senior) or $25 (junior Under 17).

A National Licence allows you to race in the Island Cup Series and gain series points and overall placing. You also need a national licence to take a medal at the National Championships and be eligible for UCI points available at the Championships and other UCI point bearing races.

INTERNATIONAL LICENCES

Cost to be passed on to BikeNZ - $130 + the appropriate insurance*. If the rider already has a national level licence, the cost is $50 + the appropriate insurance*.

An International Licence allows you to race anywhere outside of NZ (providing you meet the race entry standards). You can upgrade from a National to an International licence any time during the year by paying the difference in fees and arranging appropriate insurance.

* UCI requirements state that insurance must be included with the cost of an International Licence, and BikeNZ offers comprehensive travel insurance that meets these requirements. Insurance information can be found here.

Licence FAQs

Why get a licence?

For all licence levels, a licence

  • Recognises your involvement with an affiliated Club and through that Club (and/or Centre) the opportunity to participate in coaching clinics and obtain training programmes from coaches qualified under BikeNZ Coaching Accreditation Programmes.

  • Provides third party (public liability) insurance for you, at any time when you are participating in cycling activities sanctioned by BR&T/MTBNZ & BikeNZ

  • Enables you to compete against other cyclists who are free from the use of performance enhancing drugs - as all licensed riders are liable to be tested at any time.

For national licence holders, your licence

  • Allows you to compete in any road, track or Mountain Bike event run by an affiliated Club or Centre, or sanctioned by BR&T/MTBNZ or BikeNZ. (You may need a clearance from your Club. In some instances, eg National Road Championships, you will also need to be a financial member of a BR&T affiliated Club. Ensure you check the licence requirements with the specific event).

  • Must be presented at registration, prior to starting. Often in exchange for your race number. (After the event the licence is returned when you hand your race number back)

  • Entitles the rider to compete in Centre (regional) Championships and if selected to represent that Centre at National Track Championships and Club representation at National Road Championships (applies to BR&T members only)

  • Entitles the rider to be considered for National selection and to selection in the BR&T, MTB or BikeNZ Squads - which have regular training camps, specialist coaching and sports science involvement.

I have lost my licence card / I can't find it / I need a copy for my manager

Replacement Licences are available at cost of $10 per card. Contact simon@bikenz.org.nz to arrange a replacement. Your new card will be ordered up once payment is received. Allow 2 weeks for the licence to get to you (they are printed in Auckland and posted direct from there).

If you need proof of licensing ASAP (and if you are nice to Simon) she will print you up a PDF copy of the electronic receipt issued when your licence was first ordered and you can use that as a temporary licence.

I have a new sponsor, can I get their names on my licence?

Congratulations! For the cost of a replacement licence ($10) a new licence with additional (or new) sponsors can be produced. Send your request in writing to simon@bikenz.org.nz. Include ALL the sponsors you want on your licence (including current ones). These will be copied across to your licence, so be sure to get the right spelling, punctuation and spacing of your sponsors. Note: there is only space for 25 characters on the licence, so if you are lucky enough to have multiple sponsors, get creative with the abbreviations you want used.  If you supply sponsor names longer than 25 characters, the unlucky ones at the end will get cut off.

I race both road and mountain bike - do I need two licences?

In most instances, the answer is no - you only need one licence. You may use your MTBNZ licence to compete in BR&T events (and vice versa). Please note: if you race regularly with a club, you may be required to take out club membership with that club, even if you are already a member of another club. You only need to purchase one race licence though (the national fee portion).

You should purchase your licence through the club and member organisation (MTBNZ or BR&T) that you do most of your racing with. This club is your primary club and will be printed on your licence.  You may join other clubs (either discipline) and only pay their club fees.  Note: We can only print one club and one member organisation on your licence, even if you are a member of multiple clubs. For BR&T members, if you want to race for a club/centre at national championships events, you will need to ensure that the club you are representing is your primary club.

For national championship events, you may be required to be a financial member of a club affiliated to the member organisation hosting the championships. For example, if you belong to a MTB club and have a national licence, you will have to join a BR&T club and pay the appropriate fees before you can compete in the club road championships.

Can I upgrade my BR&T licence to a centre or national licence?

Yes. Follow the steps below to have your licence upgraded.

1. Contact your club and request an upgrade.
2. Forward your club appropriate fee for upgrade. You will need to pay them the difference in fees between the licence type you have and the type you want (e.g. $15 to upgrade from club to centre, $40 to upgrade from centre to national).Depending on what licence type you are upgrading to, there may also be additional club or centre fees that need to be paid.
3. Club forwards payment and upgrade notification to BikeNZ and a new licence is processed. If you have supplied BikeNZ with an email address, an automated email receipt will be issued to you and may be used in conjunction with your current licence as proof of upgrade.
4. A new licence card will arrive approximately 2 weeks after receipt of payment by BikeNZ.

Can I upgrade my BR&T or MTBNZ national licence to an international licence?

To upgrade your licence, you need to do the following:
1. Pay $50 upgrade fee (from national licence level)
2. Select and pay for the level of insurance you require. Insurance info can be found here: http://www.bikenz.org.nz/Article.aspx?ID=1525

You can send the above information to BikeNZ via email (to admin@bikenz.org.nz), or print out the licence applicaton form and send it by post. Electronic upgrades usually have a faster turn-around time.

NOTE: BikeNZ reserves the right to charge a $30 urgent processing fee for international licence applications received less than 10 working days prior to departure.
