BikeNZ Schools

BikeNZ Schools  ( formally known as The NZ Schools Cycling Association (NZSCA)) was established in 1968, to address the decreasing numbers of cyclists participating in the sport.  An idea was formalised to introduce cycling into secondary schools across New Zealand in the hope this would help boost numbers. In 2009 the name was changed to BikeNZ Schools.

An event consisting of a 16km Team Time Trial was scheduled and the NZSCA approached former Governor General, Sir Bernard Fergusson to have a cup bear his name, which he readily agreed to.

This event, now known as the National Secondary Schools Road Cycling Championships is often referred to as the Sir Bernard Ferguson weekend. This event is now held in the September School Holidays at Levin and Fielding in the North Island and is the showcase event for secondary schools cycling each year.

History of the event:

  • The HA Joli Cup for Team Time Trial reserves was introduced in 1971 (withdrawn 2009 use under review)

  • In 1979 a points race was introduced, and is still held on the Manfield Autocourse, Feilding

  • In 1986 a girl’s grade was introduced

  • Due to increasing numbers an Under 15 grade for the team time trial was introduced in 1993

  • 1999 introduction of the Road Races

  • 2000 introduction of racing for year 7 and 8 pupils

This event is now takes place over a three day weekend, in conjunction with the Manawatu Tour for Novice riders, with a Team Time Trial, Road Race and Points Race for boys and girls in five age groups ranging from Under 14 to Under 20 years of age. The event now caters for up to 650 competitors from secondary schools throughout New Zealand.

Since 1968 interest has continued to grow with schools racing occurring in many regions. BikeNZ Schools is now receiving registrations from schools and clubs wishing to develop school cycling events where no regular competition is available to satisfy the demand for juniors.

Historically, the NZSCA has been involved in road cycling only but through its strategic alliance with BikeNZ (service organisation), stronger links are being formed with other cycling codes and new events .
